Not familiar with

Not familiar with "NotBeans", but... nomen omen, don't you think? ;)

(forgive me for the bad pun)

I didn't get the right feeling with NetBeans, so far, though I'm trying to get back to it recently to have a look at its Rails tools (<--- oh, no, another of those nasty Ruby zealots! throw him out of here! ;)

My last five years with Eclipse convinced me that it is a superior alternative to competitors like JBuilder or Idea (not to mention JDeveloper); of course this is a rather personal point of view: I admit it has become as comfortable as an old pair of shoes, but I've seen others move to [My]Eclipse and find themselves at ease.

As for vi... well, if you meant "vim" at least, and if you really don't need the tools Eclipse has to offer I think there's no match: a bunch of kilobytes against a humongous 600 megs, text mode against WIMP (useful for remote editing)... I suggest you try emacs, though.

And if you were implying that you would rather user vi (or raw hexadecimal whistling into a modem, for that matters) than Eclipse, instead... well, that's a little exaggerated, isn't it? :)

John;MyEclipse is much more

John;

MyEclipse is much more than a bundle of plugins. Over 250,000 man-hours have been put into MyEclipse to incorporate not only open source technology, but also proprietary material. As a brief example, MyEclipse Ajax/Web 2.0 tools are completely written in-house. As a hybrid example, we have open source technologies we have incorporated in ways no one else has, like the Matisee Swing GUI designer from NetBeans.

To be frank, most developers can grab a"bunch of plugins" and add it to Eclipse. Even easier, they are now using Genuitec's free Pulse tool. But, the integration and addition of cross-functionality between the popular technologies in MyEclipse creates an unparalleled integrated environment. Many of the commentors in this thread have their favorite features, and I would invite you to try MyEclipse to see the difference.

Drop me a note to jens AT genuitec.com. I'd be happy to chat with you further or point you in a direction so you can most easily see the differences between Eclipse and MyEclipse. We compete directly with tools like RAD and Workshop in the tool realm, but at a competitive price point of only $30 or $60 year as opposed to thousands. These products are obviously much more than Eclipse + plugins, as is MyEclipse.

I hope you'll take a peek and download a free 30-day trial. I'd truly be interested in your thoughts on the product.

Best,

Jens - MyEclipse

Using it for managing EJB

Using it for managing EJB development over JBoss App Server.

Excellent package with affordable price, leaves fewer wrinkles on my face :-)

I would rather use MyEclipse

I would rather use MyEclipse 6.5 Enterprise Workbench to develop Struts applications than to use RAD v6. After I get the Struts app to running, I copy it to RAD6, change the controlle server, and now I have a WebSphere Portal application to deploy. I have not tried the Blue edition yet. It is supposed to be even closer to RAD v6, and much easier to use than RAD.

An excellent package at a great price!

Having previously only worked using vanilla Eclipse the switch to MyEclipse was a pleasant suprise. Lots of nice stuff that makes development easier.

talking about new Maven 2

talking about new Maven 2 support netbeans has far more support than MyEclipse provide. They better check http://wiki.netbeans.org/MavenBestPractices. So Why I use MyEclipse than Netbeans ?
